Final music magazine advertisement
Creating the music magazine advertisement
Step 1: I created the background effect with paper and coffee to get this stained, vintage effect. I imported the background from my documents and got my font cover for my music video digi pack to put on the music magazine advertisement. Adding the artists name and the album title at the top of the advertisement.
Step 2: I added the scannable QR code which allows the reader to scan through their smart phone camera and this will take them to the Tom Odell website. I generated this QR code on the internet.
Step 3: Creating social networking site web address at the bottom of the advertisement so the audience can easily access and search for Tom Odell social networking sites. These included, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Step 4: I gathered the social networking site logo on the internet, from a copyright free web page where i imported the logos and added them onto the advertisement. This was so the audience can instantly recognise these logos and know that they can find Tom Odell on these social networking sites.
Step 5: To make the advertisement look like it is an actual music advertisement, i added a review from my chosen music magazine choice, Q. This was simply typed by myself.
Step 6: From my audience feedback i gathered that the audience like to clearly see where the tour is taking place and the dates. I simply types the locations and dates where the tour will be taking place.
Step 7: I felt that the tour locations and the tour dates were too small for the audience to clearly see so i decided to change the font size bigger to 21.09.
Step 8: Looking back at the tour dates and who they were positioned within the advertisement, i decided to change the position of text lining all the text up and deleting the lines that separated the location to the date. I think this has gave it a more professional look and i am now pleased were the test is positioned.

Audience feedback
I have created a survey on Survey Monkey were i am going to ask several people to look at the music magazine advertisements and share their comments on the survey. The survey includes what they like and why and what they would change and why. This will help me to find out what sort of advertisements attract people and what they like and dont like when creating the finalized music magazine advertisment.
Audience feedback results
Below is a Prezi presentation on the results of the survey that i carried out the gather other peoples ideas on my music magazine advertisement mock ups.
I have created different mock up music magazine advertisement that i can use for my final advertisement. I have used Tom Odell images but when i do the final music magazine advertisement, i will be using the cast that features in my music video to replace Tom Odell.
Below is a screen recording of how i created on of my mock up music magazine advertisements along with the final mock ups.
Things to consider when planning/making my music advertisement
The placement of my artists name, the placement, font style, font size colour? relationship to other aspect of the music magazine advertisement? relationship to the artists image ad visual presence elsewhere? I feel that the font is one of the most important features within the music magazine advertisement, as this is one of the first things the viewer looks at and stands out the most. With my artist, Tom Odell, i feel that the font will be very minimalistic and not standing out too much as the music genre doesn't seem to be loud and noisy it is very quiet and emotional having a relationship with the songs on the album and the cover. The colours the same, not too bright but nothing that will be lost within the background.
Images, what is usual? is the artists image more likely or less likely to be used? could this change according to genre? what other sorts of images are used and do these reflect the genre of the artists? I feel that Tom Odell image is quiet important as it puts him in a specific genre of music and clothing style. Although Tom will not be featuring on my digi pack, my chosen actor will be and i am going to try and portray his sense of fashion onto the actor. Although the image is important, i don't want the image to over power everything and just become a image of Tom. Therefore i think the right look for the digi pack would be to have photographs of rural and run down areas to have that relationship with his music and the way he looks.
What else could be included? why choose to include these things? how do they support the promotional nature of an music magazine advertisement? I think that on the digi pack it would be a good idea just to have the record label logo, barcode and some information about copyright. I only want these features to be small and minimalistic so they don't ever shine the image that they are on top of.
Identifying conventions of music magazine advertisements
Below. i have researched different music magazine advertisements and their conventions within. The first thing i did was to consider the importance of the porcess of looking at the conventions of music magazine which will help me with going onto creating my own advertisement for my chosen artist, Tom Odell. The analysis that i have done of these exmaple music magazine advertisements, have helped me focus on specific things and things to considering when creating my own. These include artists name, the placement of the name and the albums name, the font, style and colour along with the relationship between other music magazine advertisements. Images were a common feature within the advertisements with the artists album cover/a image of them in many of the advertisements. Using the artists image instantly connects the audience with the advertisement as they will know who the advertisement is for recognising the artists image. Other images include, the record label and in some cases, the seller logo is placed on the advertisement including ITunes and Amazon. Tour dates and realese dates were also added. Below is a video of all the music magazine advertisements that i have researched and following after is the list of conventions within.
Music Magazine research
Q Magazine
Finding the right music magazine for Tom Odell's poster to feature in has to be the right decision, other wise the marketing side of the album will fail. This is why i have researched several music magazines including Q, Karrang, Mojo and many more. I have looked into depth at prices, music genre and the ratio between girls and boys. This will be crucial for Tom Odell as we need the music to get to his fans, the specific audience and new fans reading about his work.
My first magazine that i have researched is Q. This is a younger generation magazine with new, up coming artists featuring and well established artists such as Tom Odell. This magazine claims to be 'the world greatest music magazine' which means more fans for Tom and more publicity. This magazine is aimed at Tom's target audience of 18-15 year olds, along with the older generation as they seem to read this magazine too.
From the graph above that i got from Q's Media Pack which artists use to look at the magazines statistics to decide whether the magazine is right for them or not, i can clearly see that there are more males than females that read this magazine. This is useful because Tom Odell's fan base is very broad and could attract male and female audiences. For example, if i was using a band like One Direction, this magazine would not be suitable as their main fan base is girls.
MOJO Magazine
Looking into a different music magazine, i came across MOJO. Like Q magazine, they are part of the Beauer Media group. This magazine is designed to attract the older generation that have listened to music their whole life and are still interested in this type of music. This magazine does not target any specific genre but seemed to aim for the more folk, classical rock genre to attack their audiences. Because of this i feel that this magazine is not suitable for Tom Odell.
Above is an image of the statistics of J-14 music magazine. You can clearly see that looking at the stats, there is a vast amount of difference between girls and boys reading this magazine. 97% of readers are girls and the other 3% are boys. This means that Tom Odell would not suit this magazine as to the different audiences that attract this magazine. Artists that are known all over the world and are in the pop industry such as One Direction and Justin Bieber would feature in this magazine. Also, the target audience for Tom Odell is around the 20 - 30 age group meaning that this magazine would not suit to target audience as this magazine readers are the age of 15.
From the image above are some more stats on the magazine which i am taking into consideration when deciding what magazine i will be picking to feature Tom Odell.
Overall i feel that the right music magazine out of the three that i have researched, i am going to feature Tom Odell in Q magazine. This decision was taken upon the fact that the magazine target audience is well suited to Tom's target audience. The social media part of Q will gain more fans and followers for Tom and get him well known around the music industry. Although, it is a vast amount of money to feature Tom within the Q magazine, but for the amount of people that are going to read it and then follow Tom's music will be worth the price they pay. For this reason i have selected Q music magazine to be my chosen magazine.
Using the media kit that i have gained from the Q magazine website, i have found some statistics about the social media that Q has to offer. Q online is a online magazine with live feeds about artists and the latest news about them. This will be a good tool as if the Q magazine Twitter account was to post about Tom Odell's music, this would mean fans of the magazine that follow Q will now be aware of Tom's music, therefore Odell gaining more fans. As you can see from the image above the statistics on the left hand side show that there are many users of the Q social media. Another benefits of advertising with this magazine is that there is a option for the readers to subscribe to the magazines news letter, updated fans via email. The more people read, the more Tom Odell gains fans and the more tracks sold.
Although the magazine might seem like a great place to advertise an artist such as Tom Odell, there is a cost to advertising with the magazine. For a full, A4 page of advertisement, which i am planning to create, this would cost £10,072 just for one month feature in the magazine. Now this might seem a vast amount of money but with a establishing artists, selling many albums, singles and merchandise like Tom Odell, this may not seem a great amount of money. Although to upcoming artists with a small fan base, this can be too much as the magazine is well known with thousands of readers meaning they might have to find another music magazine that does not cost as much. This would mean that the artist/band would not gain a lot of new fan base with a not so well known music magazine unlike Q magazine.
Above, is an image of the MOJO readers statistics. I can see that again, like the Q magazine, more males read it than females. This is because i think that the music genre that the magazine aims at, is a very male type of music but can also attack some females. Looking at these statistics, Tom Odell could feature within this magazine as their is a fair amount of readers either end of the gender type as Tom does not appeal to one. Again, like i said about the Q magazine not being suited to artists such as One Direction, this would relate to the MOJO magazine too.
Looking at the statistics above, the mean age of readers is 43 meaning that Tom Odell would not suit to audience that the magazine is aimed for. Although i do feel that the older generation such as 40/50's, like to read about current music and artists which could attract even more readers is Tom Odell was to feature in this magazine. Also comparing to the Twitter followers that MOJO have compared to Q is that Q magazine have more followers than MOJO. I think that this is because Q attracts the younger generation and MOJO attracts the older meaning that the older generation are not socially aware of social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook.
Looking at the prices compared to Q magazine, it is much cheaper to advertise in this magazine rather than Q. This maybe because Q is a much larger magazine, with more readers and followers. It costs £7,554 to advertise one A4 size advertisement in one feature of MOJO magazine. Although this price is still high, it is a lot cheaper than Q magazine which means that up coming artists that want to be seen and heard of might consider advertising in MOJO magazine.
J-14
This magazine is a teenage, pop, monthly magazine that is within the Beauer Media Group. This magazine attacks audiences of young, teenage girls that are listening to pop music such as Miley Cyrus.
