Audience Research: Music Video Colour

To achieve the feel and look that i wanted to portray to the audience, i didn't know whether to make the music video black and white or leave it in colour. Because the start and the end of the music video is not within the memories of the couple. I took the decision of making the memories which is the middle section of the music video black and white but wanted audience feedback to see if i had made the correct choice.

I ask a hand full of people to watch both edited music videos one colour and the other black and white. These were the responses that i received.

1. Ellie Spence 'Looking at both of your music video the colour one and the black and white one, i personally think that you should change it to black and white as it defines to the audience that the memories  (black and white) are separate the start and ending of the music video were the couple meet (colour)'.

2. Mr Henton 'I think that you should change it to black and white as listening to the song that you have chosen, it seems to go with the song more having it in black and white rather than colour'.

3. Becca Payne 'I feel that you should keep it in colour as at the start of the music video were the shots are going through London, brightness and lens flare looks good but when you change it to black and white you can't see these features as much'.

From the feedback i have received, i have made the choice of keeping the music video black and white instead of full colour. Below is the music video in colour and black and white.

Editing my music video

Step 1: I have inported all my footage into Adobe Premier Pro to start editing. If and when i need any more footage, i can just import this into the file and add to the music video. All the footage at this moment is on teh left hand side waiting for me to start editing the music video all together.

Step 2: I am now inporting the track into the music video file. This is a simple drag and drop method and does not take long to do. I can now start editing the music video in sync with the music.

Step 3: Adding intro track into Premier Pro. This is the song that will feature at the start of my music video when the 2 casting members first speak. I have chnaged the volume of the song so the audience can hear the couple speak and how they first met. This was a simple method by easily lowering the volume to the level i wanted.

Step 4: I now have to time the opening music with long long i want it to go on for when the casting members are speaking. I also have to time when i want the music to sound like the headphones are out of the ear seperating one from another. I have faded half of the song when the earphones come ouyt and then fade into the main music, Another Love. This is a simple method were i drag the cross fade audio transaction on top of the audio.

Step 5: I have now started to put together my footage to create my music video. The first piece of footage that i have added needs to be made a little lighter than it already is. To do this, i simply drag the lighting effect filter on top of my chosen clip and then i can now change the direction of the light, where i want it to be more lighter, in my case the sky and how bright i want the footage to be. I feel that this lighting effect has really worked and i am pleased with th outcome of the effect.

Step 6: Following on from the lighting effect, i have now added a lense flair to the footage. Simply dragging the effect on top of the clip and then moving the flair around the footage to where i would like it. I changed the brightness, angle and where it is placed on the footage. Again, i think this has been a good outcome and i am pleased with the way the footage is now looking.

Step 7: Adding more footage to the music video like the video of a homeless person on the streets of London, i experimented with different filters like changing the exposure and turning the footage black and white. I felt that this wasn't necessary so i decided to take all effect of the footage and have it how it originally was.

Step 8: Changing the speed of the footage from 100%, the original speed to 80%. I felt that changing the speed of the footage made it seem like the person the other side of the camera felt dazed and to get the footage to cut the beat, i made it longer to fit.

Step 9: Again, like in step 5, i thought that the footage i had looked dark and needed to be lighted using the lighting effects tool available. The same process was followed like in step 5 moving the direction of the light, angle and the brightness. This made the footage appear to be in better quaintly as the camera i used, my phone, wasn't that great quality.

Step 10: Adding more footage to the music video, cutting in and cutting out the bits of footage that i wanted to feature within my music video.

Step 11: Changing the speed of the footage to cut the the beat and fit in with the rest of the music video footage.

Step 11: Again, changing the speed of the footage to get the lost effect that i wanted. The camera shakes and moves side to side searching for the girl which is no longer there.

Step 12: Experimenting with the footage that i have, changing the colour filter to black and white. Although it does look good and fits in with the music video, i decided not to stick with the black and white effect on my music video.

Step 13: I had to change the scale of the footage to fit the screen that i was editing on. This was a simple process and didn't take long. I simply has to drag the footage to scale using the corners.

Step 14: To portray the message of the relationship between the two falling apart and coming to an end re-living all of the couples memories, I had to reverse the footage that I had to create this feeling. This was simply done by going onto the time setting and clicking the 'reverse speed' option.

Step 16: Using the mirror effect on-top of my footage created a mirror effect either side of the screen. I simply dragged the filter over the top of the footage and this was automatically placed in the middle of the clip.

Step 17: Experimenting with my music video, i decided to add 3 pieces of footage into one screen. This was done by over lapping each clip and then selecting the clip indavidually and moved them about  to the order i wanted. This was a simple process but i did not like the outcome so i decided not to feature this within my music video.

Planning: Casting

As my music video is based around a couple, i will need to cast a female. She has to fit a specific age of 16-18 to hit my target audience for the music video. Candidates have to be dedicated and i am able to trust them to turn up to the different locations needed to film the music video.

Candidate number 1:
Name: Tania Garratt
Age:17
Tania was used in my previous film work for last year and was a good candidate to cast as she was confident in front of the camera and is not shy around other people. This would be good because the male that i choose to cast, may not know one another well and i need it to look like they are an actual couple so this means not being awkward and shy around each other. She does not have any past experience within acting and drama, but from past experience that i have with her, she is a great candidate to consider.

Candidate number 2:
Name: Keely Raynor
Age:18
Keely studied GCSE Drama which gives her past experience with acting and will be a good candidate. Also, she is not shy with new people and most importantly, the camera. Keely is a confident individual giving me her word that she will take part in the music video if she is needed and i feel i can rely on her when i need her on a specific date for filming and i know she will be there.

Candidate number 3:
Name: Ellie Spence
Age: 18
Ellie Spence studied GCSE drama and is currently studying A-Level Drama which makes her more used to acting in front of the camera, confident in front of the camera and acting with someone else will come at ease to her.

The chosen candidate that i have chosen to cast in my music video will be Keely Ranor. This is becuase she has past experience with drama and achieved a extremly high grade in GCSE. This

Filming date

I am planning to film part of my music video on Monday 10th March during my double media lesson. The location of the filming is going to be on the street, near the park and in the park and the field. I will be only filming part of my music video on Monday but i will be filming the next part on the following Monday. I will plan to have all the filming complete by Monday 17th March so i can start editing the music video.

Weather
Looking at the weather for Monday, i thnk that this is the ideal weather for filming. Although, i do think that if the weather was completly cloudless the lighting would be much better but with the eqipment i have, the cloud should not be a problem.

Equipment The equipment that i am going to use for filming is the Cannon EOS1100D camera and a tripod. Point of view shots will be used.

Planning: Finalising location and other elements of planning

To get the best out of my music video, i have created a film schedule that gets the best out of my time filming with my cast and other assets. This is an over view on the planning as a whole from casting, location, equipment and mise en scene.

Location
I have decided to feature my video in various different location to represent memories of the couple featuring in my music video, including, Wicksteeds Park, a home, park, resteruant and many other places. To get the best lighting effects and footage, i have planned a specific date that i will like and looked at the whether in advanced to gain the best from the shoot.
Looking at the whether forecast for Kettering on the week that i would like to film, has showed showers with the brightest and sunniest day being on the Monday. This means that i would like to get most of the filming done on the Monday where the forecast is saying is the best day to do so. Unfortunately, i am at school during monday but i can arrange for me to be out of lesson to film the footage.

Equipment
To film the footage needed to make my music video, i am going to use the best quality camera and other equipment needed to get the best results. I am going to be using the Cannon EOS1100D camera that is provided by my school which is very useful. Most of my footage will be outside but some of it will feature inside shots. For the inside shots i am going to use professional lighting eqipment that are at school which there will be no need for me to take them out of this location.

 Mise en scene
The cast that i am going to feature in my music video no not have a specific dress code that they need to follow but i would like the cast to wear casual, everyday clothing, not too dressed up. This is to fit the target audience that i am aiming for. Also, because i feature various different memories within the micic video, i would like the cast to wear something different every time another memory is being filmed. A coat can be added, change of t-shirt, some accessories, just to show that they are in a different memory and the viewers can separate one from another.
