Amy Winehouse
2. Title of the song
Back to Black
3. Date of release?
30 April 2008
4. Director of video (if possible)?
Phil Griffin
5. What genre of music does this song fall into?
Soul
6. Is there a relationship between the lyrics and visuals in the song? (Do the visuals illustrate or amplify the lyrics?
I felt that there was a relationship between the visuals and the lyrics becuase the effects used when editing the song relates to the song title 'back to black'. They have used the black and white affect within the editing of the music video. Also, you can tell that the clothing that Amy Winehoouse is wearing and the actors around her have a relationship with the songs lyrics.
7. I there a relationship between the music and the visuals? (Does the video cut to the beat? Are there solo instrumentals that are illustrated in some way by the visuals? Does the editing of the video change the pace with the music?
8. What is the importance of the artist in the visuals? (How is the artist being 'sold' to the audience? What image of the artist is being given? Does the video relate in any way to previous videos by this artist? Are there any motifs (signs) which have been used previously, or does this video represent a change? If it is the artists first video, how are they being portrayed and why?
9. Is there any voyeurism in the video? ( is the artist or anyone else portrayed in a sexual way? Are there any other aspects of voyeurism such as 'screen within screen', binoculars, cameras, etc?)
There is no voyeurism within the music video at all. The music video is based around a funeral so i feel that it would not be relevant towards the video and lyrics. There is no relationship between voyeurism and the music vidoe.
10. Does the video have any intertextuality? (Does it make reference to or show influence from any other media texts?)
11. What is the mixture in the video between performance (the band performing) and narrative (a story being told)?
Most of the video is Amy Winehouse lip singing with the lyrics but there is a story being told. The story is that she is now in a dark place, feeling down becuase of a previous relationship and now she is trying to forget the past with the funeral of the relationship between the two. Her ex could not give up drugs "kept his lips wet with his same old safe bet". He goes back to "her" (drugs) and Amy goes back to "black" (drugs) as well. She kept trying to say "goodbye" to drugs but he kept pulling her back in
